A regional comparison of China's industrial development efficiency

Editorial Note:It is generally accepted that the industrial economic efficiency in eastern China is higher than that in the country’s central, west and northeast parts. However, this has begun to change, due in part to recent upgrades and investments in the central and western regions as well as acceleration of the industrialization and urbanization process. This analysis, looking at detailed data from China’s 10th Five-year Plan (2001-2005), conducts a systematic comparison of the industrial development efficiency in eastern and western regions in China from economic, social and ecological efficiency perspectives.

 

China is a developing country with significant regional development gaps. The discrepancy in regional industrial efficiency has always been a big concern for academics, government officials and entrepreneurs alike. Recent investment upgrades and accelerated industrialization and urbanization in China’s central and western parts have raised industrial economic efficiency in that region. In light of this development, how has this changed the country’s regional disparity in terms of industrial development efficiency? What will be the new direction? The following comparative research paper provides an important analysis of the formation of the nation's regional development policy and its industrial investment structure.
