Modern services and China’s economic transformation

Editorial Note:Developing modern services is an important step in China’s economic growth and industrial upgrading. Compared with those in developed countries, however, China’s modern services remain at a low level. What has stunted this development? What should China do to get ahead? This essay proposes some possible solutions.

According to the 17th CPC Congress Report, the transformation of the economic growth pattern and the establishment of industrial restructuring are the most pressing strategic tasks for China’s national economy. The development of modern services is an integral means to realizing this goal.


By developing modern services, China will address the following developmental tasks both at present and long into the future: transform the economic growth pattern, improve and upgrade economic and industrial structures, step up the development level of the service sector through technological progress and high-tech measures, and bring about changes in the employment structure by developing modern services.
